A workshop for creative writing will be hosted on 28th June, at the Museum of Cambridge, in Castle Street, that will be run by Leanne Moden, from 2pm to 4pm. The workshop by the award-winning poet is part of a project that explores the shared cultural heritage of Cambridge.
The participants get the chance to study the customs behind the Whitlesey Straw Bear Festival and to get deeply involve with the museum’s fascinating objects and collections. They will use the collection of historical objects, writings, photographs and other articles to delve into the history of the Straw Bear.
The poet said the quirky tradition of Whittlesey Straw Bear, not found elsewhere in UK, has a man from the town, dressed from head to toe in straw, led from one house to the other, where the ‘bear’ will dance for gifts of money, beer or food offered. This tradition dates back to 200 years and was revived in 1980, she added. Now the festival attracts from across the country, many traditional dancing troupes and folk musicians and is one of the largest festival of its kind, Leanne Moden pointed out
The workshop aims to explore the customs, traditions and folklore that surrounds the Wittlesey Straw Bear festival. It is suitable for writers of age 16 or above and for all abilities. Just after the workshop, attendees have the option to read their notes at a sharing session.
It is a free workshop, but booking is necessary. The workshop which will be held from 2pm to 4pm will have a special sharing session at the end from 4pm to 5pm. To book call the Museum of Cambridge on 01223355159 on Wednesday (28 June).
