Alternative Three was an elaborate hoax, a controversial science-fiction drama documentary , broadcast on 29th June, 1977, as part of Anglia TV’s Science Report. It was more fiction than fact, intended to be aired on April Fools Day. But unable to get a slot on that day, it was broadcast on 20th June instead, which triggered a flood of calls from terrified viewers. It made headlines across the world, with its sensational ‘revelations’ that in preparation for the extinction of human life on earth, scientists were being kidnapped and made to work in colonies in Mars.
Marking the 40th anniversary of its only broadcast, the cult classic is back for a free screwing in Norwich, at The Forum, organised by University of East Anglia and East Anglian Film Archive. Professor of media history at the university and archive director, Dr. Tim Snelson, said they like local members who remember seeing it 40 years ago to come and discuss with the director. They would also like people who worked on the programme, as footage was filmed at the Anglian Studios and on location in Norfolk, to join the event.
The relevance of the film to contemporary debates, on fake news, to climate science, ‘post-truth’, on trust in experts and the question if the hoax exposed a truth about world culture, all will be discussed. Free tickets will be available, for the screening between 7pm and 9pm, on 20th June (Tuesday), on a first-come, first-served basis. After the show, Christopher Miles, director and co writer, will host a question and answer session.
