Free events lined up for Newport Jazz Weekend

The Isle of Wight will be hosting at Newport its 6th Newport Jazz Weekend, from 1st June to 4th June. The jazz music event promises to be the best ever with the National Youth Jazz orchestra being the featured big band which celebrated in 2015 its 50th anniversary.

Liane Carrol voted at the British Jazz Awards 2016, as Best British Jazz vocalist, will close the event on Sunday. She has been for more than 35 years, a pillar of British jazz and soul, captivating audiences all over the world with her exceptional talent and versatility. The jazz weekend is supported by the County Press. Some of the best known names in British jazz are here.

Alan Barnes, the virtuoso sax player, will appear on Saturday with Liz Fletcher vocalist and on Sunday with David Newton pianist. The opening night will see special guests Martin Shaw on trumpet and Derek Nash on sax. The Island’s premier guitarist, also appearing on the opening, will be Nick Page.

There is free admission not only for main events, but for separate fringe events. Many of the island’s up and coming musicians will showcase their talent at ‘Platform One Presents’, with lots of free events all over the town. Jim Thorn, event director, said he is really pleased this year and looking forward to see at the Medina Theatre, the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, as many of artists of today got a break here and to see potential stars of tomorrow performing here, with something for everyone this year, he added.
