February 19th, 2017 by Sandy

De Montfort University (DMU) of Leicester will be hosting a debate on human-robot relationship issues on 21st February (Tuesday), under the esteemed banner of the British Academy, as part of a season of free events entitled “Robotics, AI and Society”. The national academy for the humanities and social sciences is holding the second fascinating discussion, at the university’s Hugh Aston building on Tuesday night from 6:30pm. The brightest minds will debate on sex robots and the issues related to robot relationships.

British Academy’s series of debates aim to show how new insights derived through research illuminate the dilemmas, challenge the assumptions, explore new directions, make the complex intelligible and push public and political debate on some of the greatest challenges of our times. Our personal lives, business and society are being revolutionised by recent advances in robotics and AI.

What are the ethical social and legal considerations surrounding this? Dr. Kathleen Richardson of DMU and a panel of experts, will be tackling such intriguing questions on the session. Alongside her will be Research Professor in Cognitive Science at Sussex University, Prof Margaret Boden; law lecturer Dr. John Danaher, from National University of Ireland; and from Joint Research Centre of the European Commission, philosopher Nicole Dewandre. Luke Dormehl, author and journalist, will be char the discussion.

The debate is being organised in partnership with The Royal Society. The event has free entry, but registration is needed and can be done through the British Academy website (http://www.britac.ac.uk/events/are-we-ready-robot-relationships).
