A community project continues on Walney with a series of free events that gives an unusual perspective of the islands bread making history, called Walney Loaf. Art Gene’s programme is back, underway this January of 2017 to run up to April, as the Allotment Soup community project continues.
The programme features film nights, cooking events and practical planting days. Art Gene will be planting in the style of a medieval planting strip on the project field its very own grains. Bakestones and Clapcake is the the first event on 28th January (Saturday), between 2pm & 4pm. It is an outdoor cooking event where participants will learn how to make Lancashire clap and Cumbrian bannocks.
On 10th February (Friday) a bread-themed night will take place at Art Gene. On 12th February (Sunday) a special workshop will be conducted to create the growing strips. A series of 6 public walks led by artists will explore the parks, allotments, fields, medieval tracks, gardens and nature reserves of Walney Island, starting by meeting at Biggar village on 25th February (Saturday).
March will have events and activities on the growing space site. 10th March will be a workday. 12th March will have sewing the grain strip and teaching of planting techniques. 25th and 26th March will be the weekend-long archaeology dig. All these are free events and take place opposite Waley Fire Station, at the field on Mill Lane. Contact on Ph: 0797-267-5095, Hannah Brackston, for more information.
