The world premier of ‘A Splotch of Red: Keir Hardie in West Ham’, will be staged towards the end of the month in Newham (east London). The play is from the same director, creative team and writer acclaimed for the version of ‘Animal Farm’ by Orwell, played as ‘Revolution Farm’. James Martin Charlton has directed this play by Jim Kenworth.
The performances are free and supported by the Newham Council. They will be held in Newham’s libraries on 22, 23,24 and 25 August and at Canning Town’s Community Links’ Neighbours Hall, on 25, 26 27 and 28 August.
The performance is part of a trilogy exploring the rich heritage and showcasing the young talent of Newham borough. Kier Hardie is the greatest hero of the Labour Party, without whom the party never would have existed. Hardie stood for the General Elections in1892 from the West Ham South constituency as the Independent candidate and won to become Britain’s first socialist MP.
As it is a free event, residents can just turn up at the venues, but for entry reserve online at website- splotchofred.co.uk. For performances at Community Links you pay what you wish (but a suggested donation is £5). This was the hall from where once Keir Hardie spoke during the electoral rallies in Hewham.
