River based free events at Foyle Maritime Festival

The Foyle Maritime Festival will be welcoming tens of thousands of visitors to the banks for a celebration of all things nautical, running from 9th July to 17th July. There will be many events and spectacles during the river based course of the festival, organised by the Derry and Strabane Council.

The finale event will be an event to remember on 16th July (Saturday). ‘The Voyage of Sunniva- Night of the Two Moons’ will be the title of this atmospheric outdoor celebration that welcomes the medieval maritime heroine. The spectacular evening performance will harness the power of the three elements, with an aerial performance. Mayor of Derby City and Strabane District, Alderman Hillary McClintock, speaking of the event, said she looks forward to a unique and magical performance.

The Derry and Strabane Council hosting the festival has released details of the magical finale and fireworks display. A wide programme of events will be hosted from 9th July (Saturday) right through to 17th July (Sunday). Events will start from 8pm along the Queens Quay, hosting music and animation, and culminating in the fireworks on the Foyle, at 10.15pm.

The quay will be transformed into a busy seaside promenade filled with arts and crafts, funfairs, market stalls and free events of fun, fit for all ages. On July 15th July (Friday) there will be a music line-up, led by The Piptide Movement. There will be nautical displays that includes water skiing, wake-boarding, canoe river tours and dragon boat racing. A range of river bases activities during the festival include the Clipper 70 Experience with tours on the Clipper Race yachts. There will be the free Clipper Open Boat Tours from 13th to 15th July. Free tours of the 1929 Phoenix Tall Ship will be on 14th, 15th, 16th and 17th July.
