Coventry in West Midland will be hosting the Sky Ride event for the third consecutive time in August this year. On 7th August (Sunday) thousands of people are expected to arrive in the city in celebration of cycling, with cyclists of any age or ability expected to ride in a fun-filled day. Coventry city will be traffic-free and the event had attracted in its inaugural event 2 years ago, some 17,000 participants. Lots of activities will be available on and off the bike, as the free event will take over the city centre. Organised by Sky and British Cycling, the Sky Ride event has increased cycling activity in Coventry. Cyclists will pedal across the city, passing the city’s famous landmarks, like the Brodgate cathedral.
British Cycling also confirmed that they will continue to work with the Council to offer, besides Sky Ride, more cycling opportunities. Co-ordinator of Cycle Coventry, Richard Smith,expressed his happiness to welcome back the event to Coventry, for a third year in a row, the region’s biggest traffic-free event for bike riders. He added that it is a fantastic opportunity for families and friends to have fun together cycling on streets that are traffic-free, over a 7km circuit.
The Sky Ambassador, the 6-time gold medallist, cyclist Sir Chris Hoy, said thousands have taken to the streets of Coventry in the past 8 years as a result of British Cycling and Sky, and are looking forward to make this year’s event the best yet. David Bourque, the director of recreation and partnerships at British Cycling, said they are delighted to bring the event to Coventry and Sky Ride is all about getting on the bike and having fun, no matter how old you or your bikes are. The head of brand, cycling and team Sky, Ian Murray, was thrilled to see the return of Sky Ride and see so many people enjoy it.
