The Football League has signed a deal with Intechnology WiFi, to offer football fans access to free WiFi during games at the Championship, League One and League Two fixtures in future. However, the service will not be offering the full free all-internet access but instead via an app (iOS or Android), that can be downloaded for free, to provide key information. Access will be for real-time news, scores, highlights of the game, social media and access to SkyBet, the league betting sponsor.
Intertechnology WiFi will develop the app and pay for the cost of the installation, as part of the 7-year deal signed. The provider plans to create a host of revenue generating opportunities for clubs. The full list of participating clubs will be revealed on 30th June.
By providing access via an app, containing key information, during match days and not full free internet access, it will offer fans a better experience and solve the weak or patchy mobile data coverage, often seen in the packed stands, by high capacity WiFi, the Football League explained. The move underlines the push of technology to enhance offerings to end-users wherever.
Shaun Harvey, Chief Executive of The Football League, said The Football League is leading the way in delivering digital solutions and to enhance supporter experience. Peter Wilkinson, CEO at Intertechnology, said their solution and free WiFi will revolutionise the digital experience of fans on match day.
