Free exhibition, events on the criminal past of Carmarthen

January 9th, 2016 by Sandy

A new exhibition is being held at Oriel Myrddin, based on Carmarthen town’s Felon’s Register. The infamous registry which has names of criminals with mugshots and details of many crimes which ranged from stealing cheese to murder and many other misdemeanours. The exhibition- Notorious, is based on this dark past of Carmarthen. It’s inspired by the Felon’s register and other historical sources from the town’s archives.

The senior cultural services manager Jane Davies will be opening the exhibition on 9th January (Saturday) at 6:00pm. The exhibition will run until 12th March (Saturday). Anthony Rhys, the artist, takes up the register’s mugshots as inspiration to create painted portraits. He has added facial expressions to the often straight-faced mugshot images of the culprits, reflecting the nature of their crimes. The exhibition gives an insight into the social conditions and criminal activities, taken from sources that have captured and kept it alive forever, whereas most other traces of their existence have disappeared.

Artist Anthony will lead a pub crawl to pubs that have stood from Victorian times in Carmarthen, at 8:00pm. Free talks will be held at the gallery in February. A series of free events will be held as part of the exhibition toward the end of February, running into March. People are welcome to the drop-in event to be held, with no prior booking required for the events.
