January 4th, 2016 by Sandy

War hero Ben Parkinson MBE, will be launching a free walking festival in Doncaster, on 16th January. The ex-serviceman, the country’s most injured surviving soldier, who lost both legs in a bomb blast in 2006, was left fighting for life in Afghanistan. The former paratrooper, from Bessacarr, will lead the first walk to launch the ‘Get Doncaster Walking Festival’ on its 10th anniversary.

The council-led free organised walks, has a range from light strolls to lengthy walks in the countryside. Get Doncaster Walking is designed for the local people, of all fitness levels, to get walking to enjoy the fresh air, maintain socialising and for a healthy lifestyle. The walking route starts at Keepmoat Stadium and will follow the lake perimeter with Ben joined by collectors of Pilgrim Bandits charity and the Mayor Ros Jones.

The Mayor said the programme is an excellent scheme and to have local hero Ben Parkinson, a source of inspiration, is a powerful way to celebrate its 10 years. Anyone is welcome to join the free event, he added. More information is on website- doncaster.gov.uk.
