Free events at Aberdeen for the Hogmanay Celebrations

The Hogmanay Celebrations being hosted at Aberdeen will have a fabulous firework display set to music. There will also be a competition for bands on a live-on stage. The free events includes live music on a stage set up in Schoolhill, starting at 7:30pm, going on till midnight. Five bands will compete in the Northsound One to Watch, a competition to identify best new north-east talents. The stage can be seen on giant screens set up in Schoolhill, The Christmas Village, the Academy Courtyard and BackWynd / Gaelic Lane. Fireworx Scotland, the Inverurie based firm, have designed the fireworks display and will be seen from all over the city.

The firework display will be set to music, for 10 minutes, lit from the rooftops of His Majesty’s Theatre. It’s believed to be the longest of Scotland’s Hogmanay firework displays. These events come at the end of the Winter Festival, one of biggest ever hosted in Aberdeen. Lots of arrangements have been made to welcome thousands of people to the free events. First Aberdeen will be providing late night bus service. On 31 December Stagecoach services will be stopping at 10pm. More information and details of road closures are all available on the website for Christmas Village and Winter Festival (http://aberdeenchristmas.co.uk/).

Free visitor entry to astronomy session at RSPB Saltholme

A new astronomy course is being promoted at the nature reserve RSPB Saltholme, near Billingham. The 4-week course starts from 9th January (Saturday) and later a specialist event will follow on 6th February (Saturday), called ‘An Evening with Saltholme’s Stars’. Visitors get free entry for the session, irrespective of attending the 4-week course. A light supper will be served to everyone.

The first session of the astronomy course is called Exploring the Universe:an Introduction to Astronomy. On the next following three Saturdays the lessons are titled – Stars & Constellations, Galaxies and The Universe As A Whole. The classroom-based course will have 4 of 2-hour sessions. The sessions will focus on how to get the most out of the night sky, which is easily viewed from the local area.

Lydia Tague, the visitor experience officer, said their astronomy evenings are always popular and this year they give an opportunity to people to learn more. Spaces are limited for the course and the evening event, and can be booked for a price. Call up the reception by phone on 01642-546625, at Saltholme to get details and book.
