There will be an exhibition of one of the world’s oldest sports, at a free event in Madron in west Cornwall. The free event- Cornish Wrestling-An Exhibition, will be a 2-day event showing all the grapples and hitches, on Saturday, 14th November and Sunday, 15th November. The free-to-attend event will be held from 10:30am to 3:30pm in Madron, at the Billiard Room of Landithy Hall.
The free 2-day event this year is building on the success of a similar exhibition held last year and is part of the 2-year project- Penwith Points of View. This time young people and children will be encouraged to try out the sport, which is an important Cornish tradition. Cornish wrestling is distinctive and rich in history, and many people are interested in Cornish traditions, remarked Jane Howells, project co-ordinator.
The secretary of the Cornish Wrestling Association, Peter Sheldon, said this national sport of Cornwall, has been handed down by ancestors over thousands of years. This year they will provide training opportunities to children who were so enthusiastic at the event last year, he added. The free event will also see an exhibition of historical materials, an archival presentation on the sport, plus a talk by historian and Cornish wrestling champ Gerry Cawley and also Dr. Mike Tripp.
