Leeds will be hosting what apparently is the world’s first festival of arts and science collaboration, between scientists, artists and makers, at Live Art Bistro, Regent Street, from 18th to 20th September. The ASMbly festival has an exhibition featuring new artworks, plus hands-on workshops. It has talks by experts and also live music performances mixing science and technology into it. There is also a talk by Dr. Jordan Boyle, on his work on bio-robotics, who is from University of Leeds. Jane Taylor, the writer, will speak on the history of ideas of the split between mind and body.
One of the organisers, Prof. Ben Whitaker, said the best thing is it is open to anyone and welcome to be part of the group from then on, who wants to experiment and make new things. A workshop will be hosted by Dr. Lourna Dougan, physicist, and Rhiannon Gregory, Huddersfield textile artist. Here participants can weave a friendship bracelet which is from a design of a microscopic protein. To conclude the free event on 19th September, Johanne Armitage, the musician based in Leeds, will show music making from live computer programming of algorithms.
The festival comes to an end on 20th September with Superposition Sandpit. This is a 3-hour session to generate idea for projects that can be for collaboration between scientists, artists and makers. Although this is a free festival, booking is required.
