This year will see a special celebration to mark a historic occasion in motor racing at Aintree. The first British Grand Prix was conducted in Aintree in 1955. This is its 60th anniversary. This special celebration is getting organised for Ormskirk MotorFest by the Aintree Circuit Club. The last race to be held, the Aintree 200, was back in 1964.
The anniversary will be on 30th August (Sunday), entrance is free and can be seen from around 11:00am. The Ormskirt MotorFest is a free event organised by the Aintree Circuit Club with support of West Lancashire Borough Council.
The club is setting up a replica of this track, which was at that time the only purpose-built track in UK for Grand Prix. The club has taken help from Peter Molyneux, the local Scalextric enthusiast, to set up the 3-mile Aintree Circuit’s replica in the Masonic Hall above the O’Briens Tea Rooms, situated on the corner of Anghton Street and Park Road, right in the town centre of Ormskirtk.
Sixteen different Formula One races were held at the Aintree Circuit, including 5 British Grand Prix races from 1955 to 1962, which saw some of the biggest names competing. In an occasion in 1955, Stirling Moss became the first British driver to win his home Grand Prix, beating the legendary Juan Manuel Fangio, for his first World Championship victory.
