A musical will be produced by young people on Bradford, called ‘There’s No Place Like Bradford’. The musical is being organised by the Bradford Council’s Music and Arts Department, thanks to the funding given to the department by the Arts Council. Work on the production will begin later in the month, at a free workshop. It will have secondary school pupils involved and help them develop their interest in song-writing, performance and musical theatre. Theatre professionals like Amanda Glover (artistic director of Youth Music Theatre, Scotland) will be working with them, to bring alive the project.
The idea was sparked off by Bradford Council’s Tony Johnson, Head of Music and Arts, who said this would be an unique opportunity to young people involved to deliver this play, Bradford’s first-ever musical. The musical play will borrow the narrative structure of the famous Wizard of Oz, with the central character of the play encountering Bradford’s various cultures and communities.
The musical performance is planned to be held on 10th October (Saturday) at a venue yet to be decided. It would be part of Echoes of Oz, a festival that will be going on in the same week. The free workshop will take place from 25th to 29th August, held between 10AM & 4PM. For details call to 01274 385555. Or email to- tony.johnson@bradford.gov.uk.
