Summer festival of Georgian life at Richmond

August 1st, 2015 by Sandy

Richmond, the North Yorkshire town, will be celebrating GeorgeFest, a celebration of its Georgian heritage as a new summer festival, to be held from 17th to 30th August. A wide selection of activities and events will be held both indoor and outdoor, throughout the fortnight and many of them will be free of charge. The festival will include talks, street entertainment, Georgian toy-making, guided walks and even a chance to sample Georgian food.

Georgian architecture and landmarks will be highlighted and the events will try to bring to life this fascinating period of the town’s history through the people themselves. The festival’s initiative comes from the Welcome to Richmond Group, made up of the local business community’s representatives and key attractions, to promote tourism. The Group is a sub-group of the Richmond & Lower Swaledale Business Association. The festival is supported by the Richmond Town Council and Richmondshire District Council.

Chair of the Welcome to Richmond Group, James Gravenor, said the event will focus on everyday things, such as what people wore, what they ate, where they lived, how they spent leisure time and even toys of children. He added that there is literally something for everyone, as the festival is aimed at all age groups. The 14 days will host a number of free events and activities, many of them fun for families.
