The Welsh town of Wrexham is getting upgraded CCTV camera network and will be offering free WiFi for everyone. Wrexam town council stated that 24 new HD cameras are currently being installed with wireless connectivity and it will create the Wi-Fi hotspots across the town . The council will be offering limited amount of WiFi everyday for residents, visitors and others. It would be operational by coming September.
The CCTV upgrade has been allotted £250,000 for the control centre and £400,000 for the upgrade of cameras and to enable the Wi-Fi network. The wireless connectivity for CCTV also will save the council the current £82,000 yearly line rental paid to BT for the old system. The council has allocated capital funding from the Assets and Economic department for £158,000, with the ‘Vibrant and Viable Places’ contributing £168,000. The Wi-Fi networks will enable a more digitally friendly town for all. The funding provision for the free Wi-Fi and upgrade for the first year seems already arranged for. The system can be monetised, as the council hinted at getting a good amount of analytical data collected and providing information on demographic of visitors, footfall and even shopping patterns.
