Open day and free tour of Shephalbury Manor in Stevenage

April 7th, 2015 by Sandy

Here’s a chance to saunter round a spectacular Stevenage heritage landmark. A free event on 26th April will feature tours of Shephalbury Manor, once home to the Heathcote family, now an international hub of the Coptic Church in UK. Put to a number of other uses, this Victorian building with many period features remaining intact, has now a cathedral in the grounds. Designed by architect and civil engineer T. Roger Smith, the home was built for Unwin Heathcote in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, England.

To mark the house’s 150th birthday and celebrate the occasion, a special open day will be held on 26th April, Sunday. The free event will feature tours of the manor house, the Cathedral of Saint George, a photography exhibition by Stevenage Museum, plus the chance to know more about the work done by the Coptic community. Along with the open day- Celebrate Your Manor, a service on St. George’s Day on 23rd April, Thursday, will be held in the cathedral. It will be presided by His Grace Bishop Angaelos, general bishop of the Coptic Orthodox Church of UK. Shema Baston, Mayor of Stevenage, said Shephalbury Manor is an important part in the history of the place and the open day is a fantastic chance for people to find out about it.
