Two free events on the use of digital media for social good

March 16th, 2015 by Sandy

The new upcoming two free events to be hosted by the University of Portsmouth and Innovation Space, will focus on use of digital media for social good. The first event that will take place on the 23rd March (Tuesday) from 6:00PM is the Digital Media Network. The session will feature talks from many special guests, a result of the collaboration of the University of Portsmouth with Creative Network South. The second event upcoming will take place on 25th March (Wednesday) on the evening and is the Mapathon, by the University of Portsmouth, hosted by Missing Maps.

The first event will see speakers talk on how a powerful tool like the digital media can be used for coordination and making of maps for emergency to responders, at highly vulnerable scenarios. How digital media can be an extremely useful platform for citizen science. Cartographic Expert and Volunteer, Ralph Aytoun, of Missing Maps, will be talking about the mapping project. Programme Manager for the Humanitarian Sector of the United Nations, Naomi Morris, will give a talk. She’ll talk about on-the-ground benefits of volunteer mapping and on her experiences while being deployed to disaster zones by the UN. Leader of Disaster Risk-Reduction of Centre for Applied Geoscience, Dr. Richard Teeuw, will talk on development of cost-effective, yet robust procedures for vulnerability assessment, for those lacking funding or infrastructure for expensive software or data.

The second event is being hosted by Missing Maps. They’ll be presenting a talk on the previous (Tuesday’s) event. Attendees will be mapping currently unmapped zones of some of the most vulnerable places in the developing world. Training will be provided, for those needing it, on the night of the event. A laptop is needed, preferably with a mouse. Both Digital Media Network and Mapathon are free sessions, open to the public, but bookings are required to be made through the Eventbrite website.
