Free events at St. Andrews Square on St. Andrews Day
The St. Andrews Day to be celebrated at the St. Andrews Square, Edinburgh, will be taking place on 30th November, Sunday, for the first time at this venue. There will be free events at the celebrations and highlights of this year being free ice-skating, live music and a family ceilidh. All-day activities include access to the Edinburgh Christmas ice-rink, but anticipating demand to this circular ice-rink, visitors are advised to book the few available free tickets in advance. This is also a new attraction for the city’s 2014 Christmas festivities. Free sessions include a performance by famous piper Louise Marshall. Performing here will be Pyroceltica, the fiery theatre group, Murrayfield Skating School, Royal Caledonian Curling Club and Stockbridge Pipe Band. Family events include traditional story-telling, a Scottish dance workshop for all ages, a family ceilidh, face painting, a Haggis hunt, fancy dress competition and historical tours. Free Newport art workshop for youngsters
A free art workshop will be held at Project Space , Commercial Street, Newport on 1st November. This is the second free workshop in connection with the Argus’ Gwent Young-Artist-of-the-Year competition of this year. The first one was held on 18th October. It’s from 10AM to 2PM, so come over in time. The overall winner of this year’s competition would be given the chance to attend at the University of South Wales, an art masterclass offered by the university. These free workshops is being organised by the university’s Co-ordinator of Art, Media and Design Course, Charles Penwarden, where the sessions focus on generating and building on creative ideas in art. Having seen last year’s Argus’ Gwent Young-Artist-of-the-Year award, Charles Penwarden is delighted to help in nurturing the next generation with the free workshops, he has stated.
New OS X Yosemite, free download from Apple
Apple has revealed their new operating system- OS X Yosemite, which is free and ready to download for any user of Apple compatible devices. The hardware will need at least 8GB of storage space and 2GB of RAM, to run the new OS. As for devices running Mavericks (Mac OS X 10.9), there will be no compatibility issues, Apple confirms.
The new OS has the same interface on it, as found in OS 7 version. Apple wanted this updated platform to boast of a wide range of features, but to be as simple as it can be. This is evident as seen in the changes done to the features of Safari. It has been slimmed down to show just one bar, including the host-page name, with all other tool-bars put off by default. A new Handsoff feature helps users to start an app in one device and later continue the session with another. The new free download of Yosemite thus looks intent on incorporating more crossover technology.
A big improvement over the older notification centre, is that it now features interactive widgets that come from Apple and other third-party developers. A facelift to Spotlight has been given, which shows now a wider search range. It includes topics such as Bing Web search, maps, news headlines and the App Store. OS X Yosemite now comes preloaded with all new Macs from Apple.
